Overview

When you apply for consent to carry out a high-risk work practice with ionising radiation, you must submit a safety assessment to the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland via the Health and Safety Executives digital platform.

A safety assessment consists of:

It may take some time to get the information you need to complete a safety assessment template, so consider doing this before you start your application.

You can find out about local rules and contingency plans in our approved code of practice and guidance for IRR17.

The primary purpose of the submission of a safety assessment is to:

  • enable you to determine if adequate safety arrangements are in place for the practice, as defined in the regulations;
  • give an assurance to HSENI that compliance with IRRNI17 is, or will, be achieved and maintained.

Where you believe you cannot or do not meet HSENI's expectations for the content of the safety assessments you should explain why you consider this reasonable and appropriate.

To submit a safety assessment template:

  1. Select the work practice(s) from the list below for which you are applying for consent
  2. Download:
    • a new consent template if you do not have consent for the work practice or
    • a continuing consent template if you are submitting a safety assessment for a work practice that that you are carrying out that has previously been granted consent
  3. Complete the template and upload it to the HSE RADAN platform when requested during the application process – start or continue your application

You can download each template as either a Microsoft Word document or an OpenOffice document.

Fees

There are currently no fees associated with notification, registration or consent for work within Northern Ireland. However, please be aware that this position will remain under review and may change in the future.

We strongly advise that you consult with your radiation protection adviser (RPA) to ensure that you submit the correct information to HSENI.
